Guests at a bay-side restaurant called "The Ramp", in San Francisco, California, are taken on a small dingy craft, up to 3 at a time, to pull up next to jumbo-freighters and just touch them with their hands.


The motion of the water, and the huge, hard, cold mass of steel just inches away creates for participants a very visceral and vulnerable encounter. The sheer contrast in size and position between viewer and ship becomes almost sublime.


The title refers to the first four notes of Bethoven's 5th symphony--described by critics of it's time as cold, grand, eradicating everything except longing for love.
